Child Proofing Your Electrical Outlets

Like a big red button that says “Do Not Touch”, kids seem to be drawn to electrical outlets, cords, cables and other dangerous appliances. Potentially it’s because these things are in the perfect eye line for little ones, or maybe it’s a case of monkey see, monkey do with adults constantly plugging in or unplugging appliances and chargers etc in the presence of children.

Obviously this is a horrible mix, there is a few easy ways or little things that can be done to prevent access and to protect our little ones.

The first thing you could look at doing is installing electrical outlet covers. This not only prevents the possibility of little fingers finding their way into an outlet, but also stops them from pulling out any appliance leads as the cover creates a barrier. Meaning your appliances stay charged or plugged in and the potential for danger is minimised.

Another easy and cost effective way to prevent anything getting poked into an empty outlet is, powerpoint safety caps. They are a simple plastic cap that plugs into your outlet and requires much more force than a child could produce to remove.

Lastly, with an every growing supply of cords, chargers and adapters, many homes have an increased number of cords running along the floors and skirtings to and from our appliances. This not only creates a tripping hazard for children (and adults…) it increases the likelihood of a little one pulling at the cords. Cord covers are a good way to avoid this. Like a rubber tape, they secure our cords to the floor and remove the chances of tripping or getting tangled.
